If your Brooklyn apartment started smelling like an old pet accident sometime after October 1, the timing is probably not a coincidence. Pet urine odor in Brooklyn carpets and rugs often goes unnoticed all summer, then shows up once the windows close and the radiators start knocking. The smell is usually coming from below the surface, and the way you treat it in the next few weeks decides whether it fades or settles in for the winter.
Why pet urine odor in Brooklyn apartments gets worse in heat season
New York City’s heat season runs from October 1 to May 31. During those months, the city requires apartments to be at least 68 degrees during the day when it is below 55 degrees outside, and at least 62 degrees overnight, according to NYC’s heat season guidance.
Many buildings hit those numbers with old steam systems. StreetEasy reported that more than 80 percent of large multifamily buildings in the city still used steam heat as of a 2019 city report, and that those systems often heat unevenly and leave some apartments well above the minimum. A warm room with the windows shut has much less fresh air moving through it, so odors that used to drift out a summer window now linger near the floor.
Moisture plays a part too. Dried urine leaves salts and residue in the carpet backing and pad, and that residue tends to give off odor again when it picks up moisture. Overheated apartments get dry, so plenty of people run a humidifier or set a bowl of water on the radiator. Add wet boots and a freshly mopped floor nearby, and an old spot can start smelling like it happened yesterday.
Where the smell is actually coming from
Urine does not stay on top of the carpet. It runs down through the face fibers into the backing and, on wall-to-wall carpet, into the pad underneath. The surface can dry and look clean even though the pad below still holds most of the accident.
Area rugs behave a little differently. Urine soaks into the rug’s foundation and can pass through to the rug pad and the floor beneath. In brownstones and prewar apartments with hardwood floors and area rugs on top, the smell can come from the rug itself or from the pad and wood under it.
Cats and dogs also tend to return to the same spots. One visible stain often has two or three older, invisible ones near it, usually along walls, in corners, near doors or beside the radiator where a pet likes to curl up.
What you can safely check yourself
You do not need special equipment to narrow it down, and a few minutes of checking makes any cleaning far more effective.
- Get low and sniff. Odor sits close to the floor. Kneel and check corners and doorways.
- Use a black light at night. Humane World for Animals suggests a black light to find soiled areas, then lightly outlining them with chalk so you can find them again in daylight.
- Flip the rug corner. Look at the back of the rug and the rug pad. Yellow or dark rings there mean the urine went all the way through.
- Note what changed. If the smell got stronger after the heat came on or after you started a humidifier, that points to old residue reacting to warmth and moisture.
What helps, and what can lock the smell in
For a fresh accident, blot first. Humane World for Animals recommends stacking paper towels on the spot, standing on them and repeating until the area is barely damp, then rinsing with clean, cool water and blotting dry. Blot, do not rub, and work from the outside of the spot in so you do not spread it.
A few common moves make urine harder to remove later:
- Home steam cleaners. The same guidance warns against using steam cleaners on urine odor, because heat can bond the proteins in urine to synthetic fibers.
- Ammonia or vinegar. Strong smells like these can encourage a pet to mark the same spot again.
- Bleach or mixed chemicals. Never use bleach on carpet or rugs, and never mix cleaning products. Test any spot cleaner on a hidden area first and follow the label.
- Soaking a rug at home. Putting a rug in the tub can push urine deeper into the foundation and make colors bleed.
If accidents are new, it is worth a call to your veterinarian before you focus on the carpet. PetMD notes that sudden accidents in cats are often caused by a medical problem, and that stress from changes like moving a litter box or rearranging furniture can play a role. Holiday rearranging counts.
How we treat urine in carpet and area rugs
A routine surface clean rarely reaches urine in the pad. For pet urine, American Carpet and Rug Cleaning uses enzyme treatment and sub-surface extraction to reach what soaked below the fibers, with pad treatment for severe cases. Our technician looks at the carpet first and tells you honestly what is likely to improve. Urine that has sat in a pad or reached the floor for a long time may not come out completely, and we will say so before starting.
Our wall-to-wall carpet cleaning is done in your apartment, and on-site carpets and rugs are typically dry in 4 to 6 hours. Our solutions are non-toxic and family-safe once dry, with unscented options if you or your pets are sensitive to fragrance.
For rugs, the cleaning method is matched to the fiber, whether that is wool, cotton, jute or a synthetic. Delicate or valuable rugs, and heavily soiled ones, go to our facility for area rug cleaning, where they are dried flat under controlled conditions. Rug pickup and delivery are included, which helps in a walk-up where carrying a damp rug down three flights is nobody’s idea of a good afternoon.
Planning around your building and the holidays
Brooklyn buildings often have their own rules for contractors. Ask your super or management office about service hours and elevator reservations before you book. If your building needs a certificate of insurance, our technicians are fully insured and we can provide one on request.
A few other things make the visit go smoothly:
- Move small and fragile items off the floor and off nearby tables. Our technicians help with light pieces but do not move heavy pieces or anything fragile or valuable.
- Mark the spots you found with chalk or tape so the technician can treat each one.
- Keep pets in another room or with a neighbor until the carpet is dry.
- If you rent and are unsure who handles carpet care, check your lease or ask your landlord.
